What IS going on with Rebellion2

Hi Folks,

To get everyone, old and new back up to speed on what I am planning to do.

First of all, while we refer to this here as "Rebellion 2" let me make it clear that this is NOT a true sequal to Star Wars: Rebellion, published by LucasArts. They have made it clear they have no interest in making a sequal to the game. I am not affiliated, sanctioned, or otherwise related in any way with LucasArts and neither is my effort.

So what is happening is I am making a multi-player only space/strategy game, with a working title of "Galactic Politics and Adventures" or GPA. The essence of the game is can find its influences from Master of Orion, Civilization, Counter-Strike, and Rebellion.

What will happen is I will leave the ability for the user community (e.g. YOU) to create a MOD that will swap out graphics, sound, and other elements.

What we talk about in this forum is general ideas, as it would pertain to the mod YOU will eventually create. I completed the general design doc a while back, but do listen to and consider your ideas, either as new features or to affirm that the ideas I had are good ones.

And then there is the question of when will the game be done. The short answer is, "when its done." Beyond that, I can say certainly not this year.

The game will be written in Borland Delphi. The specifics of how you can customize the game with the Rebellion 2 MOD remains open.

And who am I? I'm a senior software developer/consultant with a lot (meaing 8 years++) of experience writing boring business systems and a serious PC gamer.

Keep the ideas and questions flowing. I'll do my best to keep up with them!

May the Force be with us all!

Okaaay,

Not too sure i understand about customising it, and is there anyway that we'll be able to link it to Rebellion because my own PC has no net access, so i would need to find a single player method, either by playing with Rebellion or if there were some sort of mod. Is this possible, or is it beyond even your amazing skills? (They say flattery gets you everywhere!)

This is going to be a totally new game, with no links to the original Rebellion (or Supremacy, as it goes in the UK). It is being initially designed as a multi-player only game for the time being--- there may be a single player version.

As for modifications, it will be the same sort of thing (conceptually) as a custom Half-life, quake, or Jedi Knight mod.

Okay, i think i get you now, so basically there would be a core game, and users would be able to set it up with characters and such as they wish?

Greg: Would you be releasing modding tools and the such? ie something like RebEd (but obviously much better) ?

JediIgor,

Not with parents like mine.

They seem to think that Star Wars and the web are some sort of blasphemy!

Still, i'm going to uni next October, at which point i'll get unlimited free internet for three years. Very nice.

Newbe here. So are you asking for what we want to see in this game your making? My question would be, what do you have so far. I see that it is a multiplayer game, but do all the players start off the same? or is that one of the MODs that people can change? (i.e. start as the good guys, bad guys, warlords, smuggler etc...) and how many people are going to be able to play, worlds are set up as? systems in a cluster like Rebellion, or just individual world? I have a lot more question but I figure that would get me and other a good baseline to start thinking with.

Since Igor has certifications unlike myself I hereby will let Igor do modding for me when the game that greg gets done is released.

Could you clarify that? I only have one certification, and it's just a fancy way of saying I can fix computers.

So once we get the game from JediGreg we'll just get on and mod it. Perhaps we should have an option to play as more than just the Empire of the Rebellion, but as the Hapans Sii-Ruuvi or Chiss etc.

a game that can bee completely modded by the user to be what they want add a little ST Armada into the mix there too, but i think you should have like a complete file loader right in the game that unwraps intire models .etc and have everything seperate with a total load fature for tc's but from that you got the idea if it would not be too hard make the ships customizable while in the game, you could research a new engine for a star destroyer to make it faster in rs for example, but a sd built before the research would need to be upgraded for the additional speed, and on a diff topic control of each shipyard on a planet where you can be fixing two ships and building two if you have four yards

On the research thing we decided that upgrades would be very difficult especially if you want to stay true to the star wars theme. However you could have a specforces character that you post to a ship. Call him an engineer and he would increase the sublight speed. Build a shield specialist or a hyperspace technician etc etc.

Will be part of the new game. Think similar to Master of Orion, where you can use different times of engines, weapons, etc. But these are component upgrades; making radical changes to the hull just isn't practical.

There will be crew modifiers. The longer a crew exists, the more training they undergo, and the more field experience they get will all modify their performance.

Will the "crew" experience also apply to fighter squadrons? It would really be nice to have experienced X-Wing squadrons (such as the Rogues).

there should be a limitation on modding ships though like for the empire bc the empire wants alll ships the same for ease of repair where the rebellion dont give a crap, like have a little check box or sumthin

Sounds good to me. If you keep the same ship in a fleet for longer do they get better because they get used to maneuvering together and fighting together?

ricepr2001,

As playing the Empire you would have that option, but it is just that; an option (assuming it goes into your mod anyway). You would also have the option to make those "special use" ships that were very often found in the novels and comics.

I think there should be fleet XP as a whole, and the fleet XP would be added onto the ships' XP as long as they are in the fleet; if they left the fleet, then that added XP would be lost, but if they came back into the fleet, they would regain it. How's that?

Sounds about right. How about the longer a character is given a rank where it actually contributes, i.e. Admiral on a fleet where the fleet actually sees action, their xp's go up too. Kind of like the Jedi missions, where regardless of the outcome, their points go up.
