I have become impatient of waiting for the developers on this site to release their Reb II so i have decided to make my own. If any one is interested in assisting in the development of the game i am currently looking for more developers, project manager, and graphic designers, creative thinkers, doc writers, and maybe positistions i have not thought of yet. I will try to incorperate as many ideas on this site and others as i can as they are all good. The game is being writting in C++ with directX.

and it is open source so that you can all see the progress at any time

Best of luck from me, too :!:

If you need some ideas about useful functions for the battles and such, I've already written some suggestions for JediGreg on what would be cool to have.

 

Btw, I'd be verrrry much interested in a bit of C++ code, that would display a DirectX model and its texures in a rectangle extra window inside a larger form, if you catch my drift :roll::wink:

I have practically nil programming skills... I can do formulas in excel and that's about it :oops:

Of course, I'd like to remind you not to infringe on Lucas's copywrites. Such a project could be shut down.. even if it just has the name Star Wars in the title. Generic terms would be best.. better, an original storyline and setup. Hyperspace is fine of course, "Star Destroyer" nope. Likewise an Alliance is fine, "Galactic Empire" would probably not be.

I expect a small mod would be fair use. Those seem to survive well.

 

Actual full games I expect would be shut down.

 

No point.. I doubt LEC would give permission for any of it unless they plan to make their own game. Most likely they would used an established developer that has already had a hit game.

Make your own game. And then make the tools (for us) to mod it :)

To programmermatt :

 

...since you are developing something new....can you connect the 3D battle from Rebellion to the 3D from Homeworld (actualy replace)...in this way ex:

 

you start play it like in Rebellion ....and when the battle comes the info about number of ships (class,type,fighters) will be taken by the homeworld 3D battle mode and after the battle the results will be send to the Rebellion like game :) and go on like this back and foward betwen to game types....It is possible to create such a connection ?....if so there is no need for Motherships becouse Homeworld has missions with only a determined number of ships :) see New Rebellion site for more info.

 

Also I will try to help you as much as I can don't forget to help us also :)

 

PS. I was thinking...hmmm... by the time that you will finish the new game Reb Reloaded will be finished so insted makeing something new and probably similar why not join up ?! The unfinished cards in the Reloaded can be finised in 1 month by me so I can't see why the project will not be finished ..... you see ....all of us must work together in order to achive something ....I see two new sites for Rebellion TC's based on homeworld 1 and 2 and I'm not happy :cry: so much waste of time and all of them are not finished..... YES it is all about the glory.... :lol: I felt that after The Protectorate TC, I was thinking to create my own TC site but after some consideration I realise that the glory must be shared in order to become eternal :) It is esential to stik together ...that is why I open the Mangal trilogy project and that is why I decided to remain on this site and help Rebellion Reloaded.

Anyway I will respect your decision and I will help you as much as I can.

Alright, there are several parts i want to fix/present in this message:

 

First: Due to recent notice by Evaders99 that such a project may infringe on Lucas Arts copyrights the following steps have been taken:

:arrow: A e-mail has been sent to Lucas Arts asking for permission to utilitize their copyrights in this project

:arrow: The goals of this project have been changed until further notice: it will continue to easily allow mod writting, but it will be changed from a specific game to a game engine, with the features built in such as diplomacy and tactical engine, but most aspects will be loaded with the mods

:arrow: Please note that this was one of the goals from the beggining

:arrow: As such i also wish to have several official mods that come with the game engine

:arrow: I have many ideas on how to improve the fleet combat screen

 

And as a final request. please do not post features in this topic as it will get to long, just post it here in the rebellion 2 forum as i routinely check it for new ideas. you may also go to the project page and submit ideas in the feature request feature: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=99864&atid=625566

I have chatted casually with a copyright attorney who confirms that, suprisingly enough despite your intent to distrubte it freely and despite it clearly being a labor of love, a full game with the star wars title on it could be prosecuted. :P

 

HOWEVER

 

1- The only damages they could seek would be for your profits (none I assume) and for "dillution"... and that is a vague concept meaning you were watering down the product. A hard case to make here (given all the star wars stuff that blatantly violates cannon, etc.) and also hard to put a $$$ value on, which brings us to #2

2- Since you probably have not much $ (I'm assuming you're not a millionnaire), there's no much reason to sue you...

 

So the end result would be that you'd most likely get some threatenting letters, and they would probably focus more on coercing your web provider into removing the files.

 

HOWEVER PART 2 :D

 

Evader99 is right. If you make it a game engine that is generic and just happens to have the capacity to use the files on this website, you'd be in the clear. You could even openly encourage people to create space stories of thier own...etc. etc. As the net shows, you can always find lots of people willing to mod.

 

And everyone's happy! :D

I was actually just starting to think on what to include in my version of the game, I was going to make something like what JediGreg was going to do but I wanted it to be an opensource project that others could add to as well.

 

progammerx, let me know what you are planning and I can think if I want to join efforts with you or continue what I was going to originally plan.

I just want to make sure that everyone knows the site staff is NOT developing this game. We are relying on other programmers who volunteer their time to develop a game which we can modify.

Sourceforge.net has good tools for open source project. though a generic title would probably have to be used (though they do host the files of a PHP based star wars game). If people are patient though (err... yeah, how long a go was rebellion released again?) that FreeOrion game i mentioned elsewhere on this forum has just released their very much pre-alpha version of the game. This Open Source game is designed to be very moddable from the ground up (sound like an infommercial, dont i???). Take a look if you haven't already
