When, oh when is someone with a lot more brains than myself going to make an editor that will let us edit the appearance of ships, so we can really SEE some of the great ships that are on the cards at the moment.

Someone already has. Two different ones actually. Neither are up for download.

Hi guys,

finally the forum's back up and I can tell you all, what I've been doing during the semester-break. To make it short: I also found a way to replace the models in Rebellion. I already showed Evaders a preview and he seemed to like it :)

To see the preview : http://members.xoom.it/d_kelley/rebellion/rebellion_3d_models.htm

and for the tutorial and already some models, take a look at this:

http://members.xoom.it/d_kelley/rebellion/models/

The tutorial is in .chm format, like the RebEd helpfile, so you should all be able to view it. Btw: I think the SSD is the best model I made so far. There are pictures of it in the tutorial as well.

Have fun with it, and I expect a lot more models to come :D

Ps: Who knows something about 3d modelling progs, like 3dsm ?

There are some things, I want to discuss there. Wasn't Venix a

crack in this ?

I can do the models for you.

Lightwave is what i do, but i'm decent with 3dsMax, though i try to avoid it as much as possible.

There is one thing I've encountered: in RebEd the models look fine, but in the game on some angles some of them appear 'not-solid'.

I don't know, how to describe it better, but do you know a way to apply some funtion to these models, that they are rendered as one block, without supposed invisible parts shown. Like you watch the model from the upside and the lower side parts do some 'z-fighting'.

As I said, I'm not a pro with these progs, I rather tend to avoid them when possible as well

Btw: I only have max, Lith and Milkshape and up to now no way to obtain

Lightwave. Is gmax any good ? I downloaded the version from their

server, but it cannot export to .3ds .Are there any export plugs to it ?

(I already tried to use those of max 4.x, no luck there).

Short update:

I also put LithUnwrap into the models folder. You'll need it, 'cause of the

tutorial. It is a free prog and is no longer supported by its creator, so I think he won't mind. I haven't been able to contact him for permission, so I dunno, if he'll really say yes. Better be quick with downloading this

Bummer, the pc-pool at my university has cd writers, sorry.

The sizes:

  • Lambda Shuttle - 284kb
  • Mc80b - 852kb
  • Tutorial - 336kb
  • Sentinel Shuttle - 127kb (will not show in RebEd)
  • SSD - 450kb (must-have 8) )

Well, that's it for this week with the university. I'll possibly check the forums at the weekend for any questions, or loose-ends.

Have fun !

I know exactly what you mean about the non-solidness, i think. I have that problem sometimes, but its easily fixed in Lightwave.

I dont know much about programs other then Rhinoceros 3d, Lightwave, Maya and Max.

If you're thinking about taking on 3d modelling, i recommend either Lightwave or Max, as they're simply the superior programs. Only thing i ever used that was better is Maya, but its hella expensive, and hell of a lot harder then the others.

Hmm... Where can i get this model changing program ?

Umm... you can get Maya for free, legally... Or a demo version.. or something like that.

I know for sure you can download a stripped version off Maya's website, and that UT2003 has some sort of Maya with it on the 3rd CD.

Nice work, didnt somebody figure out how the textures were stored? If you can find out I'd be happy to port over some ships for you from Xwing Alliance .

I think we'd be better off with models made by other people (say, XWA models). Unless that is what you were referring to.

We can email the people and get their permission.. but if we used the original XWA models, we could easily get sued by LEC. Sued=bad.

I wouldnt worry about it, theres a good few mods out there using the original XWA ships and LEC hasnt said a word. One of the main probs I see here is a lack of models for you to use, ie, theres no Strike Cruiser, Bulk Cruiser, MC80s etc etc.

Will we have the freedom of replacing whatever ship we want, or will it automaticly replace a certain ship like that Eclipse Class did? Maybe I should check out the tut right? Also did anyone figure out how to increase the polygons of ships?

Ok, first of all: my Executor is halfway a cut between the XWA model and another one. I don't know the name of the other author right now, but I included it in the readme of the model.

-second: every model can be replaced !

-third: maybe you really should check out the tut

-cause fourth: the resource explorer used there is another one (the link is in the tut)

-and fifth: glad someone experienced the non-solidness also. That means I didn't screw up with max. Maya's on the third ut2k3 cd ??? Maybe I really should look on that cd, instead of playing bombing-run matches :D

-sixth: the textures are 256 color bitmaps with stripped off header info, as far as I can tell and what other people told me. So far I could not decipher them

-last, but not least: I have quite a lot models, most rescued from the long-gone swma site. I'll probably set up a directory on my site, so you guys can experiment with them yourself.

Igor : Thats an evaluation version, which puts nasty "evaluation" texts on your renders and screens.

Mask : I've got about 2000+ sci-fi models, plus about 50 custom made sci fi ones. I have the full SWMA library as well.

Venix: Wow, I think I'm outgunned here

Igor: Errm, well seems I'm a newb to that too, but I'll look into it right away, thanx ! Btw: has Polycount yet started to release all our beloved Q3A models for UT2k3 ? :D

BTW@all: if you're not sure, if the new models are worth the download, I put two screenshots on my site

But are any of these going to be available for download from here? And will they be simple enough for people like myself, with no experience, to use?
