just figured I'd post this here

How long would an Executor last vs the Eclipse?

Looking great eville  :o, though you might want to use AntiAlias 2x if you want to make the shots look that bit more smooth.

A 9800 pro! You think that's bad, try a 9600XT in an old P4 and see what you get!!! ;D

If the executor crosses the bow of the eclipse, it's over. One superlaser cooked super star destroyer coming right up!

I think in a broadside confrontation though, the Executor wouldn't do so badly. It packs 250 heavy turbos, 250 regular turbos and 250 concussion missile launchers to the eclipse's 500 turbos and 500 lasers. The heavy turbolasers and concussion missiles would certainly help to shift the balance. Ultimately, the Executor would probably lose out to the Eclipse due to the latter's sheer bulk. The resulting damage from such a battle would be massive enough to mean that Eclipse wouldn't be going anywhere in a hurry in the immediate future, if at all.

On that note, will there be a 'Duel' style of gameplay? The PDS crew have put together a brilliant menu system (version 7.3) so you can select 3 or 4 ships on each side to battle it out. If that, or something similar could be applied to Warlords..........drooling right now.

It has been stated somewhere (I believe it was the Essential Guide for Vehicles and Vessels) that the Eclipse's superlaser could take out a city but not an entire planet. That said, the Eclipse doesn't stand a chance against the Death Star. The Eclipse would fire and the Death Star would likely get tickled and then fire right back, annihilating the Eclipse as easily as it annihilated Alderaan.

it was designed to pierce a planetary shield and burn up a continent

think of it this way, the eclipse is using 1 emitter from the deathstar (immediatly much less power) then it has a vastly smaller reactor to charge from (A whole day to kill a continent, the DS2 could do a planet evaporator in a few hours)

i do like the eclipse v. executer duel, but it really highlights a huge flaw in the ai. i dont know why you did it this way, but whenever capital ships are ordered to attack something, they turn towards it, regardless of whether they are in range. not a huge deald for reb ships, but its a huge detriment to imperials. the star destroyer design is meant for broadsides. facing a target, an SD is lucky if it can bring 1/3 of its weapons to bear on a target, whereas if they would remain at whatever orientation they were at when given the attack order if they are in range, or are programmed like the destroyers from vanilla hw2 which orient to deliver a broadside to whatever target they were ordered to attack, the executer would have a chance, because, as ridiculous as this is, it is much faster and more maneuverable than the eclipse. the executer would be able to win the duel, in game at least, if it did not change its orientation to attack. i had a lot of luck sending the executer far below the eclipse, and having it attack from below, then continue up to one side of the eclipse, then attack from above. the eclipse takes a long time to orient itself, and the executer is capable of pounding down the eclipse' shields while still absorbing most of the damage it takes. since the executer insists on facing the eclipse, its only fires with the forward maybe 1/4 of its batteries, since the ones midship and aft are all kilometers away. if it stayed oriented, say top facing the underbelly of the eclipse, it could fire almost all of its batteries at once. the same issue, to a lesser degree, presents itself with all of the wedge-shaped ships, most notably imperial.

it was a choice between giving the player complete control over orientation, but the AI having no control (face whatever direction you were last moving in) , or have the human controlled and AI controlled work the same way, almost everyone plays vs the AI so I made the choice. the ISD is slightly modified so that it can fire forward if you notice, and many of its guns work in that configuration in the game (and all that really matters is its big guns which have forward arcs due to the modifications, all the other guns are for crowd control)

the executor and eclipse are in mostly as a joke, they are too stupidly huge to be practical and way too powerful to even attempt to rationalize inside the game
