TIE Fighter XP

Recommended Posts

I love the TIE Fighter game, it is SO much, but it's a rather old game so naturally I assume it won't run on XP (like most older programs). Of course, Rebellion runs perfectly fine on XP, so why not TIE? So I went surfing the net and found a million and a half people who say it doesn't work and another handful who say it does with a few modifications (specifically, deactivating the 3-D graphics, I believe). I tried TheForce.Net, a Google search, and even the official LucasArts page to find about an equal amount of people saying it will and will not work and LucasArts saying it won't. So...will it work or will it not work? Does anyone know? If you must modify it to work on XP, is losing the 3-D graphics the only option or is there a possible way around that? Or, quite simply, are my days in the cockpit over?

It rather has something to do with DOS.

Tie Fighter runs perfectly under XP, if you use a dos-emulator: DOSBOX

(google it!)

I've heard, though, that the Windows 95 version does some funny things (as well as the Collectors Edition). Any known?

I'm afraid, I can't help you out with the win95 version. Didn't know, they made such. :?

3d graphics in Tie Fighter are simple vector graphics, you can't deactive or congifure anything there. Tie Fighter is an old game made for run in DOS, so you probably should get Dos version, and download dosbox, or buy some old crap machine that will support it

Maybe I'm mistaken.

What does the dosbox do, exactly? (out of pure curiosity)

What do you think? It emulates DOS instead of giving us the crappy virtual machine stuff they have in Windows XP.

Hmm, I can run the SVGA version of Tie Fighter on my XP machines (plain normal installation), though the sound is another problem.

Perhaps it would work, if I bothered to install these old dos Soundblaster drivers, but I didn't want to have those old tsr programs running in the background and probably interfere with XP.

Have you tried the dosbox program, Socl ?

For the sound, you might want to try this:

This sounds like many of the same problems I've heard. For instance, some people saying the 3-D doesn't work, others say the sound doesn't work, and still others say the joystick doesn't work. Interesting....

Not just yet, I'll have to get my laptop hooked-up to the Internet (I'm using someone else's computer, a desktop, for the Internet right now) and I'm still the process of finding my joystick's installation CD.

For the sound, you might want to try this:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/vdmsound/

Will this make the sound work?

I could make the SFX for Dark Forces work without any spcial prog whatsoever, my only prob was with music, though I dismissed that and just had winamp run in the background with all my sw mp3s.

As for TIE, the Win95 edition runs good enough on XP...

There's a patch for XW 95 & TF 95 at http://www.lucasfiles.com

Haven't tried it, but I don't have a joystick here anyway...

I got my X-Wing Collectors CD to run in DOSBox though. Still not quite smooth in-game, but I already set the frames to like 10000 cycles or so

Well, you need a strong machine to get X-wing running smooth :)

I am currently looking at my CD case for TIE Fighter and on the front it says 'Windows 95/98'...and the CD itself says 'Collector's CD-ROM'.... I have the eerie feeling this is the one that screws up, but I have my laptop with me now and I'm going to test it out.

By the way, I didn't want to start a whole new thread over this but WHY THE HELL WON'T MY AVATAR WORK?! :x It wasn't working for a while, then Jahled fixed it, and now, out of nowhere, it stopped working! :x It's the correct size and everything, too! :x

So I'm not really sure. The X-Wing Collectors CD was a DOS version.

The Tie Fighter one is a Windows version?? And according to Gamespot it doesn't run in XP.

I seriously need to find a copy, haven't played Tie Fighter.

Finally, remember that the TIE95 version is the Collector's CD Rom. :D

Well there's the Collector Series, 1998 release updated graphics using the XvT engine.

This is really confusing now hehe

Hmm...I could have sworn I did that.... :? Oh well, it's working now! :D Thanks, Trej! :D

By the way, I installed the game, but when I try to play it keeps saying that I need to install DirectX 5.2. So I went ahead and told it to do that...then another window comes up that lists off a few programs, all of which are confirmed except for one...the 3D program. I hit OK...it takes me back to "you must install" window. I tried again, this time clicking for the 3D to be disabled...once again I was back at the "you must install" window. So then I tried the "Reinstall DirectX" and back again. A LOOP!

Here's the 'you must install' window

And here's the subsequent listy window

Sorry about the poor quality.

Anyone know what I should do? Should I go ahead and download the dosbox?

If I read what this is correctly, it should be exactly what I need! :D Thanks, Evaders! :D

Now to test it....

EDIT: WOO YAY! That did it! The game is working (except for the fact that I don't have a joystick plugged in... )! :D

EDIT (Part 2): ...much less a joystick that'll hook-up to my laptop (damned little needle thingys that stick out of the place where the joystick is supposed to hook up into the back of the computer! :x ).

EDIT (Part 3): I just wanted to let everyone know that the game is working perfectly, no problems with the sound or joystick; thanks very much to Evaders for the patch! :D

Well I got Tie Fighter to work too. The 95 version, Collectors CD. Unforunately, I don't have a joystick here. So I'm using a virtual joystick program called PPJoy. Its not perfect, even with mouse and keyboard controls set, its not as responsive as X-Wing was (w/o joystick).

The main site doesn't seem to load the download.

But here's a mirror: http://www.simtel.net/product.download.mirrors.php?id=75176+
