(Because I know some of you guys don't read the news...)

You can do something nice for the holiday. And its free too.. no money required.

Donate your idle computer cycles to science. Stanford's Folding@Home project uses your computer to help simulate protein folding.
http://folding.stanford.edu

Every good community has a team. So join our SW:Rebellion Network Folding Team - team# 96904
You can install it no matter what operating system (Windows / Linux / even PS3...). Just install a client and let it go.
http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main ... mnum=96904

---------------------

Looks like we have someone already contributing! YEA!
What kind of scores do you get and what system(s) are you using?

My sister attends Stanford University. If it isn't already on the computer, it will be in a matter of days, I'm sure, so I can't join with our team, I don't think.

Try the FAQ
http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ

Basically just go install the client for whatever OS you are using. If you're using Windows, I recommend the client
Windows 2000/XP/Vista Graphical client

And once you install it, just leave the default settings. Set your username to whatever you want, and the team number to 96904

Attending Stanford doesn't mean everyone uses it. It's completely voluntary.
You can join any team you want even to it without a team. It's just cool to see a team from SWR work on it. You know all the major computer sites have a team too.

I would join, but when I´m sitting in front of my computer it never gets idle. And if I don´t use it I shut it down to save energy and so the climate. :)

I'm sure even if you're at your computer, you're not using all your processing power anyway unless your running high-end scientific simulations. You still can donate a few hours to help when you're using it and sucking up energy anyway.

Nice idea E, but i'm out i'm afraid, given my PC is eight years old, and doesn't have any idle processing power to speak of, and i'm still paying off a credit card before I can replace it. :(

Same here. My PC is far too old, but nonetheless I´ll try if it works on my computer. I hope it´s easy to deactivate that process again.

Whenever you get a new computer, you can easily donate the old one to Folding. There are even disk-less setups so you don't need a hard drive - it will use another computer as a server to save and process work units.

Thanxs to everyone who's helped out so far!

I'd offer to help but the potential fire hazard of putting a quad-core Q6600 B3 processor under full load for an extended period of time has me concerned :)

Just make sure you have the proper cooling with the CPU fan and proper airflow in your case. You should be fine, the new Intel CPUs are really much better in terms of power than the Pentium 4 generation.

Can I recommend trying out the SMP client? It will really get us a lot of points using the 4 cores.

Also, anyone with a PS3 and want to donate?

What are the specs on your computer?

It takes hours.. days for most projects to finish. That's okay. Sometimes you'll get some shorter ones and sometimes you'll get longer ones.
I have 5 computers at home I use for folding. And the SWR server is folding too.

Well I´ve got an AthlonXP 2000 with 512 MB RAM and WinXP HomeEdition. The Folding Software slowed down my PC and caused problems while surfing the I-Net. I would have been glad to help out but it just doesn´t work that good on my computer, sorry.

Update for March

Quote:
The SWR Folding@Home Team ranked up pretty fast since I started the new year, now at 8490 of 107943 teams with 214 WU. That's great. Thanxs to EvilleJedi, La_forge, plan3walk3r, Mad78, BMV, AtAt_Controller, and Sevase for their work units.

Remember you can donate your idle computer cycles to help out. All dual cores are fine, most of your performance is probably wasted if you're just checking email and surfing the internet.
Anyone running Radeon X1900s, Quad core CPUs, and PS3s are especially encouraged to join our team - team# 96904 - this will massively increase the performance of our team. Here's hoping for a Nvidia G80 client soon, so those with Nvidia 8000 series cards can contribute.

If you don't know what Folding@Home is, just check it out here. It's free and easy.
http://folding.stanford.edu/
Install the Windows GUI client and you'll see nice protein folding graphics too.

Time to upgrade your computer Eagle? :)
