About AI's ship names

Question

Hello,

Veteran of Rebellion, new to SWR.com.

Does anyone know if there is a file you can access that lists all the names the AI gives to their capital ships? I know the Rebels name their ships to have an 'optimistic' and 'hopeful' sort of theme, and the Empire uses Greek Gods and a more 'imperialist' theme.

Just wanted to see all the names the designers came up with.

Thanks

You can use Resource Hacker IIRC to see the names I believe are inside textstra.dll. look under folder 1297-1325. I do not know if this list is exhaustive. In another thread there are more names for ships for any future remake. I think you could change the names if you wanted to with resource hacker.

As a general rule of thumb, Rebellion doesn't allow adding, only replacing. Hence RebEd allows replacing one ship with another, but not adding additional ships. However in this instance, I'm unsure, as I've never tried. Anybody else know?

With any hex editor, you can open that file up and change the names (as long as they are the same size or smaller than the original, with simple letter substitution. I think you can add in longer names if you are careful not to destroy the file structure.

There is no way to add more names to the list ASFAIK. You can try, maybe the EXE will read in the extra names...that is what I programmed into the Rebellion 2008 Remake, just add the names on using a text editor and the program will read in the whole list to the EOL; so you could have a whole bunch of names. Maybe yea old reb exe will reads in the names strings the same way; but somehow I doubt it.

My code is much more flexible. I want it to be Mod friendly. So it is taking alot more time to code that ability in.

You can only change existing names IMO. If you use ResourceHacker you can change the ship name regardless of character length (as much as ResourceHacker will allow); as long as you "compile" the changes (there's a "button" in ResourceHacker for this). You can experiment and try adding names, but some of the folder number sequences are not continuous, so it's a gamble whether those are used for something else and will/won't be read in. You can only try.

When you see the names lists, certain names work with certain ship types, or groups of ship types; i.e. usually the ISD & SSD names come from the same list (provided all of the names aren't used up in the mean time). And Galleons, escort carriers, etc. also share names. When the names are "used up" that's when you get numbered ships: Galleon #1, etc.

Finally, after years of hard work I am the Supreme Sith Warlord! Muwhahahaha!! What?? What do you mean "there's only two of us"?

want a plugin that allows me to submit a document for each ship type that contains a list of ship names i come up with...that way, when i build a mon cal cruiser, it will randomly pull a name from moncalcruiser.doc instead of calling my damned ship mon calamari cruiser 342 or whatever.
