DVD to video ipod

Er, yeah- I got a video ipod for Christmas, and while it's very nice, I've next to nothing that I can use for the video part of it, and I'd kinda like to. Thus my question: anybody know how to take stuff off of a DVD and stick it on a video ipod? I don't feel like having to pay once at the ipod store and once at the video store to watch a movie of some sort, but the stupid DVDs all have copy protection on them that won't allow me to stick it on the ipod, and almost all of the programs that I come across for doing that don't seem to work too well...

Already downloaded it. It was the second program I snagged while I was trying to make this work on my own. This weekend I might renew my efforts...

  • 5 months later...

Okay, so I think I (finally) figured out how to convert video files so that I can watch them on my iPod Nano. Yes, the one that some of you may remember I got for Christmas six months ago. The very same.

Anyway, I think I finally figured out how to convert some dang video to fit on it- only one issue keeps popping up. I'm getting my videos off of the Real Player automatic download. It downloads them as Flash Video files. I'm having a hard time finding a good converter- I should be converting to MPEG4, right? The one I found seems to be working, but it's slow as can be (an hour of encoding for half an hour's video- which I had to watch before it could encode it) and I wanted to know if anyone knew of a better way to convert/a better converter. I took the first option that popped up on a Google search.

Yes conversion is slow. And you have to worry about which formats are compatible.

I've used Handbrake with some success (though not for iPod). It's free - http://handbrake.fr/

lol- way ahead of you. I downloaded Handbrake months ago. Unfortunately it can't see Windows Media or Flash Video files, so it doesn't work too well. Supposedly it can get video data from DVDs, though- I just haven't been able to do that.

When it some to sonverting videos I use SUPER and it works pretty well. But its a rule that Video conversion is always a long process and there is nothing you can do against it!

That looks like a great program, Mad- thanks for the link! I'll definitely try it next!

As the stuff encodes, is there any way to store it half in one place and half in another? For instance, half on one USB key, half on another?

Some of the converters I've used have a place to specify how to break down the file into parts (2 CD - 700 MB, etc).

From the reviews I've been reading, BadaBoom Media Converter seems the solution to long conversion times. It is designed to use the latest Nvidia cards to handle the processing.

Sadly I think its still in preview for hardware-oriented review sites only. No idea when it will be available for consumers.
