Retarded Landlords

Ok. Right now I live in a below-par apartment while going to school. Basicly I get one bedroom, a very small bathroom, a kitchen, and a hallway. My kitchen tables doubles as my desk because my bedroom is too small for one. My kitchen lacks a stove. In short, it kinda sucks. Now upstairs from me is a nicer 2 bedroom apartment, with all the works, including bigger bedrooms, a separate kitchen and a living room WITH A COUCH!!! The 2 girls who live there now are leaving this semester, so I planned on finding a roomie and moving on up to the good life. Well, I finally found a pretty cool guy to room with, but hes graduating in December, so will not be around for the spring semester.

 

So I tell my landlord that I found the guy, and he says "I put an ad in the newspaper and Im getting calls in for the upstairs apartment for both semesters. So if you want to go up there with him, you have to sign a contract with me stating that you will either find someone to replace him next semester or you will pay me for his rent."

 

Needless to say, I am not crazy about the idea of being liable to pay double the rent if I cant find a guy to room with in the spring. And being the spring semester, its quite difficult to find some one. So rather than take the risk and sign his contract, I gave up my hopes and dreams of living on the surface and have retreated back into my gloomy dungeon...

Sorry... from a pure business perspective your landlord would be a retard if you just let you have the room and didn't hold you liable. He's got just as many bills to pay as you do.

@Paul: My gf goes to college 2 1/2 hours away from mine. Luckily we both graduate in May 2008, then we will be moving up to Albany, living together and going for our Masters together.

 

@Budious: Actually, he doesn't pay bills. We pay the heat, electricity, and internet bills. Plus the guy lives about 5 hours away in LI, so he doesn't come up here and do anything. The bills come to the tenants in their name and then we have to pay. It really sucks. And I still think he's a retard.

He pays commercial property tax and maintenance fees on the building. City inspectors, etc.

Be that as it may Rob, I think Budious is correct. Regardless of his person, that particular apartment fetches more rent because it's nicer and bigger. If you were the landlord, you would do the same thing. I feel for you pardner. Isn't there somebody in one of your classes that's going for the long haul (to graduate, like yourself) that could go in with ya? Good Luck finding a roomie, I hate to see you dash your dreams so early in life.

And no, none of my friends up here from school or work needed a place. I put up notices in the buildings, and this one guy is the only one who replied. It stinks. I just get mad at him because he doesn't actually do anything. Like I said, the tenants pay all the bills, we have to call somebody if something goes wrong, we have to do our own minor repairs around the place...its just a dismal place and I wanted out.

I have not had hot water since last Monday. I live in a 3-story apartment building, and the 3rd floor moved out. So on Monday the landlord called the gas company to come and turn off the gas to the 3rd floor. Well, when I woke up that morning, I found out that the gas company had shut off the gas to all 3 floors.

 

So I called the landlord and told him, and hes like "blah blah blah they werent supposed to do that, I'll call them and get it all straightened out". But no one came Monday. So I called Tuesday, and he wouldnt answer his phone, but I left him a voicemail. On Wednesday someone finally comes, but its the oil company instead of the gas company, and they cant do anytihing. So for some reason, he called the oil company instead of the gas company, which got me even madder. So I called him again Wednesday, and complained, and hes like "Im sorry blah blah blah they'll come tomorrow". Now I was leaving that morning (Thursday) but since the gas company didnt come into my apartment (where the heater and stuff is) on Monday, I didnt think they would have to come in Thursday either. They had did the work from the outside of the building where the tanks are.

 

So on Thursday Im at my friends back home when the landlord calls me, and says "why arent you up there, the gas company is there and they need to go into your apartment." I said "I told you I wouldnt be there and they didnt need to be inside to turn it off". Well anyways, I had given a copy of my apartment key to my enighbors, so I told the landlord to give them a call and have them let the gas company in. So that was that.

 

I get back last night, to find I still have no hot water. The door from my apartment to the garage was opened, so I know that my neighbors let the gas company in, but for some odd reason we still have no hot water or gas for the stove. Its really getting me angry now, and Im ready to drive 4 hours to Brooklyn and punch the landlord in the nose.

God! That guy really is an asshole! You could actually complain to the police for stuff like that.

Haha I would LOVE to do that to him. He has it coming.

 

But I called him today and asked him what the deal was, and he claimed that on Thurday, by the time the gas company called him, and he called me, and he called them to get my neighbors, it was 4:30 in the afternoon and they said their work day was finished. Then the company was closed Friday (for Good Friday) and the weekend. They are supposed to come today. Then I can take a shower and get rid of my bed-head that I had to hide under a hat this morning.

When the gas company comes, shuts off your gas, and then places a lock on it, its kinda hard (and I believe illegal) to tamper with it. But alas, I do admit that I am not much of a handyman. I suppose I would make a sucky landlord.

 

On a brighter note, the company came back while I was at work, and my neighbors were able to run over and let them in. So I just spent 1/2 hour doing a week+ of dirty dishes. This was the first time my apartment looked like the typical male college apartment.

How to save electricity in 3 simple steps:

1. Change all you lightbulbs for ecologically friendly ones = -2% on you electricity bill

2. Make sure that at night you turn off all your appliances at the mains = -5% on your electricity bill.

3. Drill a little hole on the side of the electricity counter and insert a small pin to block the turning wheel = -100% on your electricity bill

 

I don't know if this can be applied to gaz though.

Though it sounds like it would be wise to invest in a portable generator of some sorts for when your landlord manages to kill your power...

There´s a law in germany that allowes you to shorten the rent in cases like yours. Maybe you have something similar in the states.

Alright, I'm rather ticked off right now, so I'm commandeering this thread and switching 'landlords' to 'busdrivers,' since it's more appropriate for my rant:

 

So today I decide to give blood at the blood drive (Mind you, I'm glad that I did since it save lives, but that's not important right now) I sign up a 2:30, largely because my seventh period class is run by a crazy, innarticulate hippy who tries to press her views on us. School lets out at 3:15. I figure "Oh, that's fourty-five minutes. I'll have plenty of time." Wrong. I got on the bus to give and had to wait in line behind three other applicants so that they could check me out. They had to take my pulse three times since it apparently was fluctuating (Alright, fine, so I was nervous, and unfoundedly so)

 

I finally got the needle in my arm at around 3:05. Almost 3:15 exactly I get the needle out and have to walk all the way across the school to get my stuff from my seventh period class and hear what I missed. I got it and, noticing that it was only about 3:20 thought "maybe I can catch the bus." Turns out I could- I ran to the road that leads out the main one to find the buses all stopped waiting for a red light. I get up to the bus and hammer on the door and a few friends start calling for the busdriver to open up. She won't. The reason? I crossed the street to get to the bus. I am not joking- that was her retarded reason for it! What does that have to do with anything?

 

So then, since my folks work, I had to bum a ride off a friend, and wouldn't you know that in my search I had to run across my ex-girlfriend. She shut the window before I could ask for a ride, but still, I had to run across her.

 

I finally got a ride to within about three miles of my house, but rather than walk the distance in eighty-something degree weather while wearing jeans, headed about a mile north to a friend's house in an out-of-the-way location and finally got home through him, a good half hour to fourty-five minutes after I would have gotten home had a taken the bus.

 

The moral of all this? Give blood earlier in the day and don't ride the f***ing bus. Argh!

Sorry dude. I guess we both had frustrating days today.

 

But while Im in this forum, I guess I'll rant about the current doings of my landlord. He apparently decided to rent out my apartment for the summer (even though he claims he doesnt do summer rentals), so last Friday just as I was getting for work some lady knocks on the door and is like "the landlord said he told you I was gonna come look at the apartment". I said "that bastard!!!" and then proceeded to show her my sty of a bachelor pad (I consider it one since I only see my gf on weekends, and she rarely stays here, so there is no female influence on the place).

 

My moral of the story: landlords are losers. just like deuchebag hippies from California who offer false promises of Wiis, just to rob you blind.

Wait until you are ten years older M dude! Trust me, you'll be older and a bit more wiser to life than perhaps you might be now. I say that as a mate. Very fun, but very dangerous. Live a bit without the obvious risk, and learn about roads before hopping onto one..

To bring back Tofus complaints about bus drivers:

 

My girlfriends sister (high school seniot) apparently got reported for running 2 bus lights. She knows she did it the first time, because the bus was coming and had the yellow lights on saying to get ready to stop, so she stopped, but the bus kept going and ended up stopping like parallel to her, so she decided to go.

 

So a few days later she gets called into the principals office, and they said the bus driver caught her running the bus stop light twice in two consecutive days. The second time never happened, because she was at the mall at that time, not by the school.

 

But anywho, what makes this story so ridiculous is that rather than having the school disipline her, the school sent up reports of the two incidents to the motor vehicle headquarters in the state capital, so we dont know what the results of this will be.

 

On a side note, my bus driver when I was in middle school was some crazy guy who always yelled for no reason and didn't like book bags for some reason...
