Zombies

Actually, that last post about Tex being a member of the walking dead brought a question to me.

In popular culture, espicially back in the day, it was common in horror stories and films for a zombie to eat brains. Why the brain? Why not just the flesh, or any other internal organs and whatnot? Once again, I also get this knowledge from The Simpsons, when in one of the Halloween episodes zombies appear in Springfield searching for brains. When they get to Homer they knock on his head, which produces a hollow thud, then continue the search for brains.

Well, the brain is nowadays very much seen as the prime location of the personality. So eating the brain is symbolic for eating, i.e. destroying, taking over etc., your 'you', so to speak.

In older cultures, the heart was seen as the location of the soul - and so it was the target of symbolic actions like rippin' it out and even eating it.

As i quite like Zombie movies let me explain the reason for brain eating.

I the first Zombie movies the living dead would simply eat the whole body (as seen in The Night of the Living Dead or Braindead). The brain eating came with the film The Return of the Living Dead (really worth seeing since it is actually rather amusing). In that film the Dead eat the Brains of the living so as to make the pain of being dead go away (rather weird I know). The Simpsons episode is a reference to that film.

Hmmm...so a quick brain snack made the zombies feel better about death. Interesting, but I prefer it when they target the entire body and just eat skin and bone and all the gushy stuff in between.

I recommend watching both parts of the Movie "Return of the living Dead". It´s ugly, it´s scary and also damn funny. You remember Michael Jackson´s Thriller-Zombie-Vid? Well a Michael Jackson-double appears in the second part as a Zombie of course. :D

My two bits: In Spook and Stiff (Both nonfiction books) Mary Roach investigates the "Scientific search for the soul." The leading candidates for its location are as follows:

The Brain

The Heart

The Blood (Okay, so only one guy thought that, and it was the guy who 'discovered' the circulatory system- I just thought it was pretty good)

Thus, the zombies are eating your very soul. Sort of. Kind of. Meh. I'm amazed that only Chuck Norris eats people's hearts...

It's true. Speaking of which...

Chuck Norris is like a zombie because if you manage to kill him, he'll get right back up.

That exactly proves why Chuck Norris is NOT a zombie. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, can kill Chuck Norris

Two new zombie films to be released soon:

28 Weeks (sequel to 28 Days) - http://www.blackfilm.com/20070105/features/28weekslater.shtml

Grindhouse (double feature - 1 of the 2 being a zombie flick) - http://www.grindhousemovie.net/

Both sound good. I loved 28 days as a zombie movie. That one fat old lady scared the crap outta me.

As for grindhouse, I am also excited. I saw the trailer when I saw 300 (I think) and I also the posters, and was like "wow this looks sweet". And it does. Two movies for the price of one, espicially one by Tarentino. Im excited.

On an unrelated topic (well, at least it still involves the undead) has anyone else ever seen From Dusk Til Dawn? That movie is pure insanity. The first half of the movie seems like a normal run of the mill hostage/drama movie. Then the kidnappers take the hostages to this bar, which happens to be a vampire hangout, and the movie turns into this vampire-killing slayfest. Great great movie!

I saw that movie several times. It´s pretty cool. 8)

28 Days was quite good, allthough I wouldn´t say that it´s a pure Zombie-Movie. I rather prefer the original versions of "Night of the Living Dead" and "Dawn of the Dead" plus "Zombie". Another very cool movie which has zombielike creatures in it is "Lifeforce", which has really cool effects. "The Night of the Creeps" is also very nice. 8)

i'm just gonna throw this in there.. the movie y'all are talking about is titled 28 Days Later. 28 Days is a Sandra Bullock movie about an alcoholic in rehab... just thought i would clear that up for y'all... and yea... From Dusk til Dawn was a bad ass movie..
