What to visit in Texas?

My girlfriend is planning a trip to Texas. Of course we are going to see all kind of tourist's stuff - but is there any must-see from the point of view of someone living there (or near to it)?

 

I'm thankful for any suggestion!

Btw, my girlfriend's got some friends in Switzerland, too. So maybe you have some suggestions for a trip there?

Tessin is one of the most beautiful places in switzerland. My uncle had a couple of houses there. Especially worth a visit in spring and summer. Visit the Lago Magiore and the cities around there, Ascona and Locarno. And dont forget to make a trip to Lugano. You may love it. And italy isn´t much far away than.

 

Wallis is also very beautiful. Not just in winter-times.

The really pressing issue now is Texas and all I came up with so far is Barring's Crater - because the pictures look a lot like what the Falcon hid inside in ESB

Of course I can´t tell you anything about Texas. That´s up to DarthTex or my brother, who drove around there with his Harley nearly 10 years ago.

Well, no problem. It's just that my girlfriend asked me to come up with something - even though she loves to do all the planning herself and mostly ignore my suggestions Women...

Okay, I checked what I was doing as I typed that, and for some reason Tex isn't on the list. Why is he gone, La Forge? Have you been tampering with the interior workings more than you should have? I'll find Tex's full name (I don't know if it has an underscore or not) and post it. Then you just have to enter his name under who to send it to....

If you're going to be near Western Texas, Carlsbad Caverns really is worth seeing, but don't; do not bother with Roswell.. please spare yourself.

DarthTex. Thats the full name. Anyway he usual pops around rather often. Seeing the word Texas in a thread name should make him come very fast.

Actually, Roswell was quite high on our list... Is it *that* bad?

If I was to go to Texas, I would love to see the Alamo. But yeah, I would definitely talk to the man with the plan, Tex.

 

As for Roswell, not even I, a believer, would go there. Roswell is just a tourist trap that people threw together for belivers...

Yar, Roswell is run-down, and actually very dull. The "attractions" don't even have that historic look like they where at any time in history a big deal to look at. The "museum" is really sad, although we did take these amusing pics. of the Starbucks on the main street.

If you where going to be out in that area, White Sands is appealing for some. It's a desert of white sand out in the rest of the desert, kind of a drive but you can find some neat pictures if you walk around out there. Again, depends on if you find stuff like sand appealing.

I lived in El Paso, Texas for the majority of the time I was in the Army, so I got out and explored a lot of the area. =o)

If you want a taste of historical Texas living and are near Fort Worth give the Stockyards district a visit. A lot to see over there.

LOL... I really should have had that sign in the window of my last job. I would stay out drinking late and just wonder in the next day at 10:45 or whenever the hell I would drag ass in. Most days the boss was not there so I was responsible for opening store and there be a bunch of customers standing around waiting on me ;p

OK Verdex, you and the little woman are planning to visit Texas; Yee Haw! Now were you planning on visiting specific cities or the whole state? Now, if you're going to visit the whole state, you'll need a couple of months to see most of the big cities (and you'll be spending most of your time: traveling). Texas is a BIG state (<== check out the link; it's over a 250,000 square miles, and takes approximately 13 to 14 hours to drive across east-west or north-south). Sooooo ... I could write here for hours and hours about everything. But to save some time, when exactly were you planning this trip? I would suggest visiting this website http://www.traveltex.com/. It should help answer any general questions and help you decide where you want to go (depending on your time frame), or what to do when you are in Texas. Let me know if you have any detailed questions

@ DarthTex: Hey, there you are! I would have tried to contact you via pm but have been quite busy today.

 

I let the 'little woman' do all the planning, she's rather good at that. So far we've been to California and Florida (not in one trip though and she did a marvelous job of taking us to interesting places.

 

As far as I understand it, we are going to fly to (probably) Dallas or Austin (where she's got a friend) and then work our way towards the Grand Canyon. Is this enough info for you to tell me more?

 

General timeframe is this summer, likely in July. I expect warm if not hot weather. Rightly so?

If your planning in July expect it to be BLAZING hot.. but thats me.. im originally from the north so Texas is way too hot for me at times... My family and I once drove from Houston to Canada and we went through Dallas over to New Mexico then Arizona and up to the Grand Canyon.. its a pretty nice drive.. lots of scenery... just dont expect too many cities once your into and past West Texas... its pretty open out there.. if your going to Austin definately swing down to San Antonio and see the Alamo.. its pretty neat.. it all depends what you're into really, as to where you want to go and see... i mean.. if your not down with historical structures its probably not a wise idea to go see the missions in san antonio.. anyways... ok, more details: We are going from Austin to Las Vegas. What's the best trip in respect to sight-seeing and the like?

The reason I asked.. is because that they can easily plan a trip for you by plotting out your driving route and such. They often can suggest sights to be seen and other interesting things. However, that aside (because that can take the fun out of it) i would at least stop by a local office and see if they have books on the different states which you are going to end up driving through. They are often very informative as to where one can stay and what one has the chance to see. I've heard that the Natural Bridge Caverns just north of San Antonio are quite nice, but I have yet to make my way up there. I'm sure Tex will have alot of suggestions, he seems as the sight seeing type.. I'm too lazy to see too much.. lol. Ive also heard Big Bend is nice.. its out in West Texas on the Mexican border and could be a quick swing by trip on your way out of Texas towards New Mexico...
