Somone was bound to bring it up at some point or another. I'd rather do it myself and get it over with.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/31/international/middleeast/31danish.html

What's everyones take on the situation?

Yes, It's against Muslim religion to have pictures of ANY worshiped figure. (Something to do with the Ego? I can't remember.)

But there are people across half the planet screaming at a govenment to appoligise over something an independant newspaper did. They can't of course, the newspaper did it not the government, so they can't appologise.

Protest to the newspaper or something, don't burn down the country's embassy.

I was wondering, these comics came out in September, why has it takien until now for there to be a global response? And what a response! The news paper has appologised by the way but things are still getting worse.

I find this is all going over the top and that they are over reacting.I just think of the pope. How many cartoons of him have been made? thousands!

Anyway i can't really judge since I am not a muslim.

I can sympathise with them, and am even somewhat supportive of their boycott, for it is a peaceful demonstration both of power and of dispise for what has been done. In hurting the Danish economy they are demonstrating their faith without truly hurting anyone that can't afford to be hurt. Igniting the embacies on the other hand is not the way to go. That's the 'crush the infidels' approach, not a good one to go with. More often than not you wind up with a rocket up your- well, you get the picture. Taking innocent lives is never justified, so I am in favor of the boycott and openly opposed to the arson.

I think they're behaving like childish prats myself.

I generally cringe when any faith can't handle a laugh at it's expense.

The frequency of Muslim anger at this and that though is getting a bit boring. I can remember in the 80's when they were yelling loudly on British streets for Rushdie, a British citizen, to be murdered in their faith's name because he wrote a book. Pathetic. Sorry guys, if you want to live in Europe you have to adapt to freedom of expression.

Woah, I am by no means saying that demanding anyone's death or undue pain as a consequence of their actions is a good thing! Far from it! I'm very much a "Your freedom of speach and action ends when your fist encounters my face" person (Yes, that is an actual quote... From who, I forget). I'm just saying that boycotting for revenge is better than saying "THE INFIDELS ARE TRYING TO DENY USHEAVEN! KILL THE INFIDELS! SUICIDE BOMBINGS!! KILL KILL KILL!!!!1"

Typical muslim overreaction, any reason to kill infidels is a good reason.

I talked with a muslim friend about what he thought of the whole buisness. He told me that he thought it was all over the top.

Yes if only the christians would take a stand against Kanye West for his portral of Jesus on the Rolling Stone cover then we too could have our own excuse for jihad against hip hop.

I've got nothing against muslims, or any faith for that mater. However, I think those people in the Middle East, part of these riots are foolish and over reacting.

As one person interviewed on the topic said (and this isn't a direct quote) - "we have to put up with anything they say (such as being infildals) or do to or about our beliefs, but we can't do anything about theirs."

I'm a firm hater of double standards and just think it's stupid what some of these* people do.

Ah, I love irony

*Once again, this isn't a generalisation - after all, being a muslim doesn't mean you're violent or going to flip out after something bad is said about your religion.

Good post d_16! I was thinking about posting it myself but obviously, you beat me to it. My view on the matter, then...

Well, I must admit that I feel that muslims have the right to be insulted. But I also feel that there are better ways to vent this than the path they are currently embarked on... Seriously, attacking diplomatic connections is hardly ever the way to a solution... Stop it... Rather talk and reason with us... I'm sure we can come to some respectful common ground on this matter. And, in doing I think we should both realize that freedom of speech is paramount, imho.

That is something some people sometimes find hard to understand. And even though a community will allow freedom of speech. They can take it very badly that someone go against one of their main laws, even if the person is technically not concerned by them.

Well, the point is that, in Europe, you can already sue someone who was insulting to you or a group you belong to. Muslims in Denmark could have done the same thing.

I found this drifting round the internet:

Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!

EDIT: oh I forgot, whilst I respect Gary Larson's ability to make me laugh out loud for about a decade, his obvious intention to insult sheep is utterly unforgivable...
