  1. Hey Slocket, hope all is going well. Haven't checked in here for a while. Tested out RebRel0001 and RebTact006. Both worked great on my system. That little escort carrier can just go back and forth for ever getting hit by that SD Love ya work Jez.
  2. Having not been here in AGES, I may have to fall madly in love with you...
  3. I just wanted to say how awesome that pic is. DIE REBEL SCUM!
  4. I have been pondering this, and personally I am not sold on a ship limit either. I see where you are going, but it is not a feature I would be voting for. As far as memory management goes, do you need a new visual object each time you have a ship on screen? I would have thought you only store them in ram (GPU or system) once per ship class with multiple pointers from different units using it.
  5. I decided on having credits besides resources, as I think it holds a lot of promise without making the game overly complex. Thanks for the suggestions guys! It is great. I am REALLY interestedin the whole 'space lanes' idea. I like where you are all going with it but I will have to see if there is a good way to build it in with out too much complesity. I don't want to clutter up the game. The simple fun aspect is really important.
  6. Thanks DarthTex! You know, the more I see 'real' star wars galaxy maps, the more I wonder if the whole sector thing was a waste of time. Which would be a shame considering I have just about finished making the galaxy->sextor->system->facility thing all fit together... Sure I made the sectors sizes adjustable but I feel like I may have #Cough# #copied# #cough# a flawed concept. P.S. I do like your galaxy layout though!
  7. Heh, yeah. Complexity just appears. It can be hard tro explain exactly what makes a simple sounding concept difficult in practice. I think the main issue is that the full mental image we build up as we go is hard to write down. I just found something pretty cool. I was trying to decide which nasa pic I should use as the default galaxy background (modable, of course) and I stumbled on this: Star Wars Universe Map. I doubt I will follow that pattern as it looks a little to close built, but maybe someday...
  8. To be fair, I have actually bothered to write up some of my activities on "Insurrection". Rather then start a new blog or anything, I am using an existing one of mine. The posts related to this are: What my game is about Introduction/How not to build a game Day one - two steps forwards, one step back Day two, Loading and Saving There may be something of interest to someone in there!
  9. Thinking of graphics, I was trying to think of places to get good free (as in beer) images to use in game. As my "Insurrection" is starting from bottom up (galaxy level) One of the first images I needed was the galaxy background. Then it became obvious. NASA. So I thought I would share. So if anyone else needs background images, I can highly recommend you take a look at what they have to offer.
  10. Hey all, As there seems to be a renewed interest in Rebellion2 development on a number of fronts with: Terra Reconstructed by Moribundus - possibly the most senior active project so far SWRebellion2 by DavidAdas - New project and advancing rapidly it would seem! In Defence of the Empire by NordWindRanger - Now on hold IIRC. Not directly a Rebellion style but I think it counts due to interest Rebellion 2008: A New Source by Slocket. (Advanced project but new to this list!) and Insurrection by me. - Possibly the least ambitious and yet, somehow, the least likely to ever be complete A good way to drive ourselves is to involve people (like loosing weight or getting fit. Tell someone you are doing it and keep them updated and you are more likely to succeed) which seems to be happening already. The community here is already giving good comments etc in the threads here, but I thought that maybe we should have a special thread dedicated to showing updates to these (and any other) projects? It may also make it easier for people to join/contribute to them. If you like the idea, post your updates here as a one stop shop for all to see/help/comment on/laugh at/what ever. Even trivial small updates. If there are any projects I have missed or that start up, post a link and explenation in this thread or let me know and I can edit the first post. What do ya think?
  11. lol, bugger. I just spent an hour or so fleshing out how I wanted to load/save/default and mod the galaxy and reasources. I thought I would use XML and .NET serialization to do most of the hard work for me. But now, I changed my mind. I want to save the image resources and stuff all in together so I might give the DB method a go. Embedded firebird perhaps. Even the extra overhead of requiring a tool to create mods with will still be easier in the long run. At least the class structure still works! Additionally the move will bring me back into native code in which I am more familliar anyway. Pointless post I know, but I felt I needed to tell someone
  12. I went to check out your code for Terra, but required a username/password?
  13. Credit where credit is due my friend! Heh, trust me to have missed the obvious Sweet. My C++ is almost as rusty as my Java but principles are the same between languages (syntax aside) so it normally doesn't take long to cratch up. My issue is always the graphics. I simply suck at them. I can do functional development and UI's but suck at graphical code and it stops me in my tracks every time. I guess that is what you get from working in Database system development! While I think about it, the fact that XNA studio won't compile inside VM's is infuriating too.
  14. Hey Moribundus, I jest went through your site and Source Forge stuff. Just wanted to say nice work I love the detail you have gone into. It does seem ambitious indeed. Good to see a project start documentation about what it intends to achieve! Might be worth having it written somewhere prominent what language you are using and any other tools (components, IDE, etc) as it will help people who might join you. It may have been there, but I didn't see it. That said, A+ over all
  15. Uh, Although I don't want to dis your oppinion (java is a fine language and has the things you just mentioned)... You do realise that they are standard in practically all 3rd gen languages right? Again, I don't see any benefit one way or the other here. IIRC 'Frame' in Javs is just 'Form' in another language... Make sure you experiment with other languages then the ones you learn at uni/college/work. It can be very eye opening and good for the career too
