  1. It looks like that Imperial stormtroopers ARE the regular ground soldiers of the Galactic Empire as was established in 2014 with the debut of the Star War Rebels series. When the original Star Wars RPG came out in 1987, published by West End Games, stormtroopers were portrayed as separate from the regular Imperial Army troopers. The question of Imperial Navy troopers: are the Navy troopers stormtroopers leased out to the Imperial Navy, or are Navy troopers separate from stormtroopers?
  2. Stormtroopers, I think, come from three main sources: clones, Compforce and Imperial Navy troopers. Compforce units that prove themselves unusually competent militarily are generally integrated into the Stormtrooper Corps. Navy trooper units that prove themselves fanatically pro-Imperial are likewise drafted into the stormtrooper ranks. The stormtrooper clones are bred by Kaminoan cloners or by Spaarti cloning cylinders.
  3. The Imperial Navy occasionally would hire private mercenaries and/or conscript Planetary Security Forces (including both ground forces and space forces composed of starfighters and capital ships), but the Imperial Navy is actually far less likely to use mercenaries and Planetary Security Forces than is the Imperial Army.
  4. The Imperial Army must also have a source of recruits for it's artillery and armored forces. The drivers of repulsorlift troop carriers and tanks and the Army walkers (AT-ATs and AT-STs) are recruited/conscripted from the ranks of the stormtroopers and the Planetary Security Forces. The operators of Imperial Army artillery weapons are generally stormtroopers, with the occasional conscripts from the ranks of Planetary Security Forces and volunteers from the ranks of mercenaries. Compforce members are generally not considered competent to main artillery or pilot a walker or repulsorlift vehicle. Imperial Navy troopers generally lack training with regards to Army artillery and vehicles. AT-AT drivers, I assume, are generally former stormtroopers because they still wear armor. AT-ST drivers, on the other hand, are recruited (often drafted) from the ranks of the Planetary Security Forces because they generally lack body armor. Both AT-AT and AT-ST drivers are often trained to pilot repulsorlift tanks and troop carriers, though occasionally TIE fighter pilots are loaned from the Imperial Navy to use as repulsorlift pilots (piloting a TIE fighter is not unlike piloting a repulsorlift vehicle).
  5. Although many of the foot soldiers within the Galactic Empire's Imperial Army are obviously stormtroopers, many are presumably NOT stormtroopers. For example, the Imperial Army officers could temporarily loan Imperial Navy troopers who are normally stationed aboard Star Destroyers and other Imperial capital ships to use as infantry if there is a shortage of Imperial stormtroopers. There are other sources of foot soldiers for the Imperial Army in case there is a shortage of stormtroopers and Navy troopers. The Imperial Army could hire private mercenaries as foot soldiers, and these either be humans or aliens. The Imperial Army could recruit Compforce troopers, who represent the paramilitary wing of COMPNOR, the civilian branch of the Empire's central government. Compforce troopers are often ill-trained militarily but are fanatically pro-Palpatine and pro-Imperial. The Planetary Security Forces maintained by the governments of individual planets for law-enforcement and military defense could also be pressed into service by the official Imperial military (both the Army and Navy). The Galactic Empire's Army forces therefore would have five main sources of ground troops: stormtroopers, Navy troopers, Compforce, mercenaries, and Planetary Security Forces.
  6. There is a well-known roleplaying game called Legend of the Five Rings, published by Alderac Entertainment Group. It focuses on the fictional, Japanese-like nation of Rokugan, also called the Emerald Empire. Rokugan is ruled by an Imperial monarch and a samurai caste divided into clans and families. A player character usually is a samurai who belongs to a school that trains bushi (armed warriors), shugenja (priests who invoke the power of spirits in order to perform magic), or courtiers (who are involved in politics by attending the court of the ruling Emperor or a high-ranking samurai).
  7. The Galactic Empire, in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, had it's Commission to Preserve the New Order (COMPNOR), which included Compforce as COMPNOR's paramilitary division. Compforce itself was divided into two divisions: Observation and Assault. Compforce members with Observation were essentially officers within the Imperial Navy or Imperial Army. Compforce Assault soldiers were basically a type of stormtrooper within the Imperial Army. The Imperial Army had millions of ground troops, and the majority of them were Imperial stormtroopers, with most of the stormtroopers either being human clones or Compforce Assault troopers. I assume that most non-stormtroopers within the Imperial Army were actually Imperial Navy troopers more-or-less temporarily assigned as ground troops.
  8. Imagine, what if Palpatine (a.k.a. Darth Sideous) did NOT instruct Anakin Skywalker (a.k.a. Darth Vader) to use the Master Control Signal to shut down the Separatists' army of battle droids after Anakin/Vader slayed the members of the Separatist Council on the planet Mustafar. In this scenario, Palpatine wanted to prolong the Clone Wars another three or four more years in order to grant him an excuse to transform the Galactic Republic into the Galactic Empire. Remember, the clone troopers already had slayed most of the Jedi under Order 66 and Anakin already slayed the Jedi younglings in the Jedi Temple on the capital planet of Coruscant with the aid of the 501st Legion of clone troopers. I also assume Obi-Wan Kenobi still mortally wounds Anakin on Mustafar, and Skywalker is still rescued by Emperor Palpatine and ressurrected wit his black armor and mask and new cyborg body along with the use of the name of Darth Vader. Meanwhile, the new Empire continues to fight the Confederacy of Independent Systems for another three or four more years while Vader continues to hunt down Jedi survivors. By 16 or 15 BBY, the Galactic Empire and the Separatists sign a ceasefire, though the Imperial-CIS treaty requires the CIS government to aid the Imperials in hunting down Jedi. It must be noted the Known Galaxy is now divided into two main governments, though citizens of the galaxy are often uncertain which regime is the lesser of two evils (Palpatine's Empire is increasingly repressive, though the CIS is dominated by greedy corporations who sometimes engage in their own atrocities). Thanks to the division of the galaxy into two major regimes, Palpatine lacks the resoures to build one Death Star battlestation, let alone two. In 3 BBY, an Imperial decree of Palpatine's reorganizes the Imperial Senate by requiring senators to be appointed by COMPNOR. In 2 BBY, various rebels groups in both Imperial and CIS space unite with Mon Mothma as their supreme civilian leader into the Alliance to Restore the Republic, or Rebel Alliance, to overthrow both the Galactic Empire AND the Confederacy of Independent Systems. In 0 ABY, in the Battle of Yavin over and on the moon Yavin IV, a satellite of the gas giant planet Yavin, a joint force of Imperial and CIS forces sees the Rebels' X-wing and Y-wing fighters battle Imperial TIE fighters and CIS droid fighters while on the surface Imperial stormtroopers and CIS battle droids battle Rebel soldiers. Under the leadership of Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi and his new apprentice Luke Skywalker, the Rebel Alliance defeats it's foes. In 3 ABY, on the icy planet Hoth, another joint Imperial-CIS taskforce led by Darth Vader, and composed of his flagship Executor, Imperial Star Destroyers, Banking Clan frigates, and Trade Federation battleships, actual defeat the Rebels and force them to evacuate their headquarters on Hoth. Vader lures his son Luke Skywalker to the Cloud City on the planet Bespin, and captures him and sends him to the Imperial Palace on Coruscant. In 4 ABY, the Rebel Alliance has relocated to the forest moon of the planet Endor, and this time, another joint Imperial-CIS taskforce, this time led personally by Emperor Palpatine, Vader, and Luke with the Executor as the flagship. Above Endor, the Rebels' Mon Calamari cruisers, X-wings, Y-wings, A-wings, and B-wings battle the Executor, Imperial Star Destroyers, Imperial TIEs (including some of the new TIE interceptors) as well as CIS forces (droid fighters, Banking Clan frigates, and Trade Federation battleships). At one point, shuttles land on the Endor moon with Imperial stormtroopers and walkers and various CIS droids, but the Rebel forces unleash a big surprise: the primitive Ewoks aid the Alliance forces and tie up many of the Imperial and CIS forces in the forests on the Endor moon. Meanwhile, on the Executor, Luke convinces his father to turn from the dark side of the Force and the Empire. Together, father and son battle the Emperor and kill him, and escape on an Imperial shuttle and land on the Endor moon. However, Vader had been mortally injured by Palpatine's Force lightning, and dies. The Imperial and CIS forces retreat from the Endor moon, leaderless. In the wake of the Imperial-CIS defeat at Endor, the Rebel Alliance transforms into the New Republic. The Galactic Empire divides into several rival, independent factions as the Imperial Army and Navy fragment, although the Confederacy of Independent Systems remains intact. The CIS and the New Republic both grow at the expense of the remains of the decaying Empire. By 9 ABY, the Imperial factions reunite as the so-called Imperial Remnant under the Chiss Grand Admiral Thrawn and his second-in-command Captain Gilad Pellaeon. The Remnant opposes both the New Republic and the CIS. The Republic and CIS form an alliance against the resurgent Imperials, though Thrawn's military and political genius nearly topples both governments until late 10 ABY as Leia Organa Solo (daughter of Darth Vader and brother of Luke Skywalker) convinces the Noghri people to turn against the Imperials, and this results in Rukh, Thrawn's Noghri bodyguard, in assasinating the Grand Admiral. For the next nine years, the Known Galaxy is the scene of a three-way political and sometimes military struggle between the New Republic, Imperial Remnant, and CIS. In 19 ABY, however, the three governments sign a peace treaty. From 25 to 29 ABY, the Yuuzhan Vong invade from another galaxy armed with their living biotechnology, and it takes a combines effort of the new Jedi Order, New Republic (renamed the Galactic Alliance), Imperial Remnant (now calling itself the New Empire), and the CIS, as well as the living, intelligent, mobile rogue planet Zenoma Zekot to help defeat the Vong, with the Vong survivors settled on Zenoma Zekot. By 40 ABY, the revival of the ancient Sith Order and the professional Mandalorian mercenaries is noticed, as well as the crowning of Jagged Fel as the new Emperor of the New Empire, with his Victory Without War program, based upon economic, social-welfare, educational, scientific, and technological aid to impoverished planets.
