  1. I had a random itch to play Rebellion again today and thought I'd swing by the old stomping grounds to see what was new. So imagine my excitement to see the announcement on the main page for the patch and mod! What fantastic work by everyone involved, it's truly wonderful to see people still putting effort into enhancing a 25-year-old game as a passion project.
  2. I'm glad to see that they're going to be releasing the books as ebooks. I got rid of all of my paperback and hard cover Star Wars books years ago to free up space on my book shelves (my interest in the novels waned severely towards the end of the Yuuzhan Vong invasion), so being able to have them all again in one, convenient location would be wonderful. With luck I won't be left out on my iPad.
  3. It's only a matter of time before the galaxy is once again safe for the citizens of the Empire.
  4. They're not updated nearly enough; my home city has been showing a three-year-old, snow-draped visage for... well, three years, I suppose.
  5. I'm confused as to why anyone would bother to vote in these elections, to be honest, because the candidates don't seem to be campaigning on a platform of facts and solid policy; instead they mud-sling and instill fear in voters of what might happen if they vote for the opposition. Why are there so few statistics, facts and numbers? Sure these things can be manipulated, but they can also be factually refuted, but they serve to inform the voters rather than scare them. Oh wait, that's why: some don't want informed voters. I was struck by Tex saying that if Obama were to be elected you should "prepare for the worst taxes & unemployment this country has ever seen since the Great Depression". Frankly you'll be in the same state of affairs no matter who you elect. The United States is sitting in a deficit of upwards of 3.5 trillion dollars, depending on which set of financial records you decide to look at, and how much information you include from those. (please avoid the "that's just the right/left media", because that doesn't fly) Think of that number for a moment. That means that even with a GDP of $13 Trillion the US is in the red, and will continue to dig deeper unless some technique of raising more money is found. So, if McCain is elected he will have to either take similar measures as Obama, or ignore the problem and watch Rome burn. I get this impression that the people of America are becoming afraid to voice their criticism of their government for some reason. Oh, right, it's because their government can now punish them for it. I know this is a somewhat all encompassing post of a number of opinions, but the government is suppose to fear its people, not the other way around. Don't let elected officials and running candidates scare you into voting their way. Get off your ass, turn off Faux News, CNN, MSNBC or whatever other news outlet you're watching and go out and get some bloody facts, for goodness sakes.
  6. Tex, I'd like to thank you for spelling doughnut correctly. I happens all too rarely these days. In celebration of National Doughnut Day I will eat my share of the tasty treats (despite the fact I'm late in doing so).
  7. I believe is the single greatest use of any Mario game, ever. You may not like the music, but you have to give the creator credit for the shier insanity of it. There was a version in which the background music didn't have the lyrics, making it more obvious what he was doing, but I can't seem to find it...
  8. Williams has a particular style that he uses, as most composers do, that would make his scores seem similar, however they're certainly not interchangeable. Basically most of Williams' scores involve trumpet fanfares (especially for thematic sequences for male characters), soft flute segments repeated by a more aggressive string repetition of the theme (for female characters) and rolling string phrases punctuated by brass for almost everything else. I've always felt that this suited the Star Wars films quite nicely, though. Imagine the original trilogy without a score, or scored by someone else; the films would have a much different feel to them. The scores for the new trilogy veered away from this style of music somewhat, or greatly embellished upon it to the point where the familiar feeling of classic Williams was gone. Going back to my original point though, I think that Duel of the Fates is over recycled as you will find it in nearly every trailer for a Star Wars film, video game or product since the release of Episode I. It wasn't even that great of a composition to begin with. I would like to say that saying Williams' score compositions are essentially interchangeable and that there is little difference between them is a bit unfair. While I'd agree that they are stylistically similar you couldn't use a snipped from Indiana Jones in Star Wars, or any other film that Williams has scored. If you actually listen to the music from those films, without being distracted by the visuals or the audio you'll find that there is much more to each piece than you think. While those differences may not be overtly clear when you watch the films I think on a subconscious level we pick them up
  9. That trailer was quite good. Am I the only one getting sick of having Duel of the Fates used for every lightsaber battle, though? I know it's a bit much to ask to have John Williams compose all new music for a TV series (even if it's going to be started in theatres), but come on! I know, it's just a trailer, but you know it's going to be used throughout the series as well. Maybe it's just me; I liked the original movie scores than the prequels. That said, I'm really glad they chose the animation style they have. It's a nice blend between cartoon and CGI.
  10. I had a lenghty post prepared, however I realised it was just an extention of what I've already said, so I thought I'd save everyone the pain of rading the same-old. I've been reading reviews of Iron Man, and so far it seems to be holding up. I was a fan as a child and although I don't expect it to be a good comic book adaptation, I at least hope it will be a good film.
  11. You are certainly not the first person(s) to undertake the challenge of creating a new Rebellion game, and I very much doubt you will be the last. That said I do wish you the very best luck in your endeavour and I hope that you'll update us on any progress that is made. Also, beware of lawyers. With how large a cash cow the Star Wars franchise has become I'm afraid LucasArts is unlikely to take infringement upon their territory lightly.
  12. Yes, after I really thought about it I realised that even though, logically, it's nothing to speak of the fact that it's not as common place here does give it a shock factor. I suppose that's what the movie producers are aiming for. As you pointed out they may decide to keep escalating it to the point where R-rated films are indistinguishable from pornography, just to maintain that shock factor.
  13. While I realise that male genitalia are considere to be more private than a woman's breasts, I can't help but wonder if you, or indeed most people, would be decrying a sudden increase in the senseless flaunting of topless women in movies (granted, this has already happened somewhat), or if there were (more) full frontal nudity of women? I know you said it didn't bother you, but there are some people (probably men, for the most part) who would be bothered by male nudity, but not female. As for the media becoming more perverse, I think it's just a sign that North America is slowly edging out of its prudish shell. Certainly something like male nudity would barely be worth mentioning in Europe, whereas here it sends mothers and fathers into corners, to whisper and shake their heads in disapproval. I'm sorry to take that off ona rant, of sorts, but the thought just struck me as I read your post. In general I don't go to see the sort of comedy movie that Harold and Kumar is simply because the over all quality of "teen comedies" has decreased drasticaly in recent years (with the possible exception of Super Bad, however I was less impressed with it than most), especially since Epic Movie. I find the over all quality of movies these days to be low, with the exception of one or two gems that somehow manage to slip through the fingers of whichever film executives crappify scripts. I tend to waste my hard earned money on whatever poorly-envisioned comic book adaptation happens to be spewing filth on audiences. Some times I even get lucky and there's a film that claims to be based on a novel, with half the story gutted from it and a plot vaguely resembling what most people remember. That reminds me, Iron Man is out today! Ok, so Iron Man looks pretty good; but will it stand up to Indiana? I think not.
  14. I've been watching the new iteration of Battlestar Galactica for the past three, almost four years and I must say I love the show. Now we approach the conclusion of the series with roughly twenty episodes to go, and already I've got this overwhelming sense of loss. The show captures you in a way most Sci-fi shows don't: at a human level. Sure there's plenty of flashy technology in the show, but for once that's not the focus. It's a human drama that takes place in the future. It's not a sci-fi show with human drama. I'm just curious if I have any fellow BSGers here as well. If so I'd really like to hear your opinions of this season so far! If not, I really encourage you to take a look at some of the earlier seasons. I'm confident you won't regret it.
  15. I frequently visit Digg throughout my day, and this was on there a few days ago. This man us truly dedicated and talented!
